Call him Dr. Combs. Sean “Diddy” Combs gave the commencement speech at Howard University Saturday. He also received a honorary degree in humanities at the ceremony.
“We are honored to have Mr. Combs serve as our speaker,” Interim President Wayne A.I. Frederick said. “He sat in classrooms where our students sit, walked ‘The Yard,’ and like many students, his entrepreneurial spirit was sparked at Howard. We know he will inspire our class to work hard and to always strive for excellence.”
Despite the controversy surrounding Diddy’s selection as this year’s speaker, he delivered a passionate, inspirational speech. Along with Diddy, speeches were also made by Wolf Blitzer, Benny Golson, Clive Callender, and Indra K. Nooyi.

Hampton University has issued a “no twerking” order to the young women who attend the historically black college. Students who are caught “twerking” may be subject to disciplinary action.
This is not the first time that HU has received media attention from condemning something on campus. In 2001 the dean of the School of Business issued a controversial ban on cornrows and dreadlocks. Male students enrolled in the school’s 5-year MBA program who take the seminar class cannot wear the hairstyles in class.
What do you think? Is HU taking it too far or are they trying to shape their students into respectable human beings?
