Malik Taylor, the rapper known as Phife Dawg whose nimble, clever rhymes helped launch A Tribe Called Quest to both commercial and critical success, died Tuesday at the age of 45 from complications resulting from diabetes. Rolling Stone has confirmed the rapper’s death.
Taylor had had health issues for years, undergoing a kidney transplant in 2008 to deal with a longtime battle with diabetes. “It’s really a sickness,” Taylor said in Beats, Rhymes & Life, Michael Rapaport’s candid 2011 documentary on the group. “Like straight-up drugs. I’m just addicted to sugar.”
“Malik was our loving husband, father, brother and friend,” his family said in a statement. “We love him dearly. How he impacted all our lives will never be forgotten. His love for music and sports was only surpassed by his love of God and family.”
“Family, my heart is shattered at the loss of my beautiful son,” Taylor’s mom Cheryl Boyce-Taylor wrote on facebook. “Thank you for your love and good wishes. Malik made me so proud, and he was a good and humble son. What holds me is that he brought joy through his music and sports, and that he lived a magical life. He is with his beloved grandmother and his twin brother Mikal today. God bless you Malik Boyce Taylor. Please send prayers to my daughter-in-law Deisha.”
Our sincere condolences go out to Phife’s family. He’s a legend and will be missed!!

Last week the title, tracklist, and release date of To Pimp A Butterfly, Kendrick Lamar’s hotly anticipated follow-up to 2012’s Good Kid… M.A.A.D. City, were all unveiled. And although To Pimp A Butterfly was scheduled for a March 23 release, late Sunday night Lamar tweeted a link to iTunes that allowed fans to buy a clean version of the album. Shortly thereafter, the unedited, explicit version became available for download, with the album appearing on Spotify shortly after that. But while this may seem like yet another surprise album release from a high-profile artist, Anthony Tiffith of Top Dawg Entertainment—which represents Lamar—tweeted that the album’s release was, in fact, the record label’s mistake.
As of now To Pimp A Butterfly has been pulled from iTunes, with only the album’s first single, “The Blacker The Berry,” available for download. The record is still up on Spotify, however. Those looking to hear the album before March 23 may want to hurry, however, in case that stream ends up getting pulled too.
Somebody’s getting fired.

Rapper Xzibit tied the knot Saturday night near Laguna Beach, CA. He and his bride, longtime girlfriend Krista Joiner, partied with friends at the St. Regis Monarch Beach. After getting pelted with rice early Sunday he left.
But the union got interrupted in Laguna, when cops pulled Xzibit over for speeding. He reeked of alcohol so the officer cuffed him and took him to the station.
It’s fitting … Xzibit was associated with the group, The Alkaholiks.
Collaborations are very common place in todays music and has always been a way to bring artist together on one song to help bring attention to a particular release. The Am Caffeine morning show is introducing their unique take on the art of collaborations.
The Am Caffeine morning introduces their “No School” project which brings together legendary rap artist and R&B artist who have never worked or recorded songs together until now.
