Selma may have gotten shut out at the 87th Academy Awards for major nominations, but the film scored a huge win at the night’s telecast. John Legend and Common won the Oscar for Best Original Song.
The duo took home the coveted award right after they performed the song which brought tears to some Hollywood stars such as David Oyelowo who portrayed the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr in the film and Chris Pine. Taking the stage after receiving a standing ovation, Common told the crowd and viewers at watching the ceremony:
Recently, John and I got to go to Selma and perform “Glory” on the same bridge that Dr. King and the people of the civil rights movement marched on 50 years ago. This bridge was once a landmark of a divided nation, but now is a symbol for change. The spirit of this bridge transcends race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and social status. The spirit of this bridge connects the kid from the South side of Chicago, dreaming of a better life to those in France standing up for their freedom of expression to the people in Hong Kong protesting for democracy. This bridge was built on hope. Welded with compassion. And elevated by love for all human beings.
Props to Common & John Legend on their Oscar Win!!
We were first introduced to Teyana Taylor back in 2007 when she appeared on MTV’s My Super Sweet 16. What first caught our attention was her signature curly ‘fro, but her crazy style and swag it was has had us hooked. Before the show aired, she signed to Star Trak/Interscope Records where she released her 2008 debut album, From a Planet Called Harlem. Her first single, “Google Me” peaked at number 90 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Unfortunately, she was released from her contract with the Staar Trak/Interscope earlier this year.
Shortly after, the young Harlem bred rapper/singer signed with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music label where she is now a part of one of the hottest rosters in the game that includes Common, John Legend, Mos Def, Big Sean, Pusha T, Kid Cudi and CyHi Da Prynce, to name a few.
It’s been a long time coming but Ms. Taylor has finally released her debut solo project ‘The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor’ with appearances from Jadakiss, Fabolous, Wale, Travis Porter and more. The cover art closely resembles that of (one of her influences) Lauryn Hill’s 1998 debut solo album ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’.
